What are empty calories and how ...

So, how many empty calories you can eat each day? In a perfect world, that is not consumed. You want to eat fruits and fresh vegetables, only healthy and lean meats cooked without fat rich sauces or spreads. But for many of us, it is not likely.

Therefore, the Food and Drug Administration of the USA has (USDA) standards set to every day consumed to limit the number of empty calories. The limits are based on age and gender.

  • Children (2-8 years): 120 calories per day
  • Children (9-13 years): 120-250 calories per day
  • Girls (14-18 years): 120-250 calories per day
  • Children (14-18 years): 160-330 calories per day
  • Adult females: 120-250 calories per day
  • Adults Men: 160-330 calories per day

Any recommendation assumes that the empty calories extra calories are consumed after it has reached its recommended other important nutrients and food groups receiving. And still empty calories should be included as part of the recommended total caloric intake.

Confused? This example might help. When a grown woman who are trying to lose weight in the diet of 1200 calories per day, you can eat up to 250 empty calories per day. But make sure that the rest of the meal will help you eat a healthy diet to meet guidelines and not more than 950 calories.

Unfortunately, most people consume too many empty calories. The USDA estimates that 90% of Americans consume too many empty calories.
